#Marvel phase 4 series
There’s a lot of talk in the entertainment press and fandom about whether Marvel has lost a step, whether they have a real “plan” going forward, and whether the quality of their films and series are on par with the Infinity Saga. With the financial issues out of the way, what about the artistic side of things? There’s a lot that could still happen - Covid could mutate into an even more virulent form, Russia’s war of aggression in Europe could expand and draw in NATO, domestic terrorism or another attempted coup could upend society entirely - but barring any of the worst-case scenarios (which is sadly a big assumption at this point, in light of current trends) Marvel looks in good shape to ride out whatever comes next and retain their seat at the head of the studio table. So ultimately, with a solid $5+ billion from six releases and another big hit arriving this weekend, Marvel hasn’t really lost a step after all in terms of box office success.

Why bother, if you can still consistently make a billion bucks worldwide without it? Which reduces the need to make controversial edits or to include nods toward the Chinese government to gain approval and release in that market. However, now that theaters are reopening and the public is eager to return to multiplexes, we’re seeing that Marvel doesn’t really need China after all - a lesson that might resonate increasingly with other studios, especially since China returns a paltry percentage of ticket sales to the studios (usually less than 30%, and even below 25% in some cases). Clearly that didn’t cause the Spider-Man franchise to blink, but the rest needed the added boost and simply suffered a bit from being shut out. Marvel movies typically do big business in China, but all of the post- Endgame MCU films were blocked from release in the Middle Kingdom. But mostly, it was the Covid - the lockdowns, the valid fears and precautions, the fact many workers and potential viewers were too sick or were hospitalized, and the fact hundreds of thousands of viewers wound up dead.
